Aitana Enciso entrevista a Nate Maingard

When did you start to play music? Wich instrument?

I started on the guitar when I was 14 years old

Empecé con la guitarra a los catorce. 

Who has influenced you the most in your career (parents, family, spouse, teacher…)

I would say I’ve most been influenced by people who live life true to themselves. Those who choose, despite all the odds, to live a liberated existence. People like Hunter S Thompson, Maya Angelou, Jesus, Frida Kahlo…Iin my personal life, I’ve been very influenced by my parents, of course. My siblings too, always a huge support and inspiration. I mean, two of my songs are about my brother and my sister (Little Brother and Oh My Good Friend).

¿Quién te ha influido más en tu carrera?

Diría que me han influido  gente que vive su vida fieles a sus principios. Esos que eligen, a pesar de las dificultades, vivir una vida libre. Hunter S Thompson, Maya Angelou, Jesús (Cristo), Frida Kahlo…

En mi vida personal, me han influido mucho mis padres, claro. Mis hermanos también, siempre han sido un gran apoyo e inspiración. Dos de mis canciones son sobre mi hermano y mi hermana, (Little Brother y Oh My Good Friend). 

What do you think about the situation in your country (if you don’t want to speak about politics, nevermind. You can speak about the enviromenntal problems in Southafrica)

I think we need to move beyond this isolating, insulated illusion of separation by country. Borders are invented. We have one planet, our border is the atmosphere…and if we fuck it up, we all lose out. Everyone’s so focused on their little corner of the world, missing the big picture: we are killing our home while we focus on infinite economic growth. It’s a system doomed to fail unless we can find a better way. We either succeed together, or we fall apart.

¿Qué opinas sobre la situación actual en tu país? 

Creo que necesitamos avanzar más allá de esta ilusión alienante de la separación por países. Las fronteras son inventadas. Tenemos un planeta, nuestra frontera es la atmósfera… y si la jodemos, perdemos todos. Todo el mundo está tan centrado en su pequeño rincón del mundo, que se pierde lo esencial: estamos matando nuestra casa mientras nos centramos en el crecimiento económico infinito. Es un sistema destinado al fracaso si no encontramos una manera mejor. O triunfamos todos, o nos fastidiamos todos. 

You made a campaign some time ago to alert and rise some money to help in a fire near your home. How did this experience affected you?

It was an intense time, fighting flames which raced over the land, coming to consume my dad’s house. It was a wild experience, and I felt proud of how the community came together to deal with it!

Fue muy intenso, luchando contra las llamas que corrían por el campo, acercándose a quemar la casa de mi padre. Fue una experiencia salvaje, y estoy orgulloso de cómo la comunidad se unió para gestionarla. 

You use social media a lot. Do you think it’s a millenial thing, or just a way to survive as a songwriter?

When I first got into social media, it was for the fun of it, it was this exciting new way to connect with friends and people I’d never met. As I’ve grown into a professional online creator, I’ve learned a lot about the companies behind the social media websites. I know that they are creating addictive products designed to keep our attention and gather our data, so they can sell it to advertisers and make money with the attention they’ve taken from us. 

So, I love the potential that social media has, to connect us in authentic ways, but I am also highly concerned about to motivation behind the face of these platforms. Their goal is to make money out of us, not to help us have better lives, or be better people.

Empleas mucho las redes sociales. ¿Crees que es un tema “millennial” o una manera de sobrevivir como cantautor?

Cuando empecé en las redes sociales, era por pura diversión, era esta nueva forma de conectar con amigos y gente que nunca había conocido. Conforme he crecido como profesional, y creador online, he aprendido un montón sobre las compañías detrás de las webs. Se que están creando productos adictivos diseñados para mantener nuestra atención y reunir información, para que puedan venderla a los publicistas y hacer dinero con la atención que nos roban. Así que me encanta el potencial que tienen las redes sociales,  para conectarnos de manera auténtica, pero estoy profundamente preocupado sobre la motivación detrás de la cara de estas plataformas. Su meta es hacer dinero con nosotros, no ayudarnos a tener mejores vidas, o ser mejores personas. 

And last: What are your future projects now? European tours? Spain maybe?

I’m recording and releasing one song a month to build up to my album release in April/May 2018. You can hear them as they come out on my Patreon page (http://patreon.com/natemaingard), or wait until the full release next year.

Además, también he sacado recientemente un nuevo podcast llamado “Desnudándose con Nate”, que es para inspirar a la gente a que viva de la manera más honesta y auténtica que pueda.
